Dallas Goedert and the Eagles are Working on a Big Time Extension

It has almost been a year since the Zach Ertz trade rumors erupted, and it seems as if the Eagles are on the verge of making a commitment to Ertz's understudy, Dallas Goedert. With training camp right around the corner, we could see Goedert receive a big time extension according to John McMullen. Goedert and Ertz are both set to hit the open market in 2022, and they are deserving of top money at the position. It is unrealistic for the Eagles to retain both tight ends, but is Goedert worth top tight end money?

In 2020, Goedert was by far the most efficient member of the Philadelphia Eagles, and even though he missed four games due to injury, the third year tight end had the best year of his career. Goedert totaled 46 catches for 524 yards and 3 touchdowns on only 65 targets. Even more impressive, Goedert caught 70.8% of his targets and dropped only one pass. Goedert is also one of the top blocking tight ends in the game, and PFF's advanced metrics have Goedert as the second best blocking-receiving tight end in the game.

If Howie Roseman does decide to move the veteran Ertz, Goedert would be set for a breakout year. Goedert has continued to improve throughout his career, and the next step he needs to take in his game is to be more consistent each and every week. There were moments in the 2020 campaign where Goedert looked like a young budding star, but there were also games where he disappeared. Tight ends are extremely valuable to a team's success, as the last five Super Bowl champions have had an elite tight end on their roster. If Goedert can take the next step in his game to be the soul tight end, and replace the legacy Ertz left behind, the Eagles rebuild will be ahead of schedule as they would have a franchise piece for the foreseeable future. With the value of tight ends in today's NFL, I believe the two parties could be looking at a three to four-year extension, with upwards of $9 million a year.
