Eagles June 3rd OTA Notes

Eagles football is back? Eagles football is back!

Although more casual fans might not have known it, the Eagles were back on the field for the first time since the regular season ended against Tampa Bay. Well, not actually. The rookies were on the field for rookie minicamp and OTAs started a couple days before today. But today was the first day that reporters were allowed to watch and see the birds on the field. Just understand that this is only OTAs, so these are very light practices and many players are missing.

Let's get to the notes!

  1. Eagles practice was only 50-55 minutes today. Nick Sirianni has emphasized short/light practices since he has been head coach in Philadelphia.

  2. The Eagles were missing a lot of guys on the offensive and defensive lines due to these practices being voluntary. Lane Johnson, Fletcher Cox and Jordan Mailata were among the veterans that did not participate today.

  3. Cam Jurgens got reps at Center with Jason Kelce not in attendance today. Jack Driscoll got the RT reps in Lane Johnson's place.

  4. WR Britian Covey, a UDFA the Eagles signed out of Utah, looks like he has the potential to be a great KR/PR but is very undersized.

  5. TE Tyree Jackson, who tore his ACL last season, was around for practice today. He watched from the sidelines and had a sleeve on his knee.

  6. Quez Watkins, Jalen Reagor and Zach Pascal were not in attendance today.

  7. Kyzir White and TJ Edwards were the starting linebackers for 7on7s today.

  8. Marcus Epps and Anthony Harris were the starting safeties for 7on7s.

  9. Jalen Hurts' first throw of practice in 7on7s was a 40+ yard competition to DeVonta Smith.

  10. Hurts threw a 50+ yard TD to WR Deon Cain over perfect coverage from Darius Slay.

  11. S Jared Mayden had a PBU while covering Covey on a throw from QB Reid Sinnett. Mayden had a couple of pass breakups in 7on7s today.

  12. Smith toasted Slay down the left sideline for another touchdown on a deep throw from Hurts.

  13. On the next play, Slay nearly picked Hurts off on a throw intended for A.J. Brown, who ran a stop-and-go route.

  14. Hurts had another good completion to Jack Stoll through a tight window; hit him in stride.

  15. Hurts overthrew Brown deep down the right sideline. Brown was open.

Player of the Day: Jalen Hurts

Hurts may have missed a couple throws but it's very promising to see him succeeding on these deep balls, even if this is just light OTAs. With an improved receiving core, it's hard to see him not improving compared to last season. This training camp should be all about gaining more chemistry with A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and the other guys in the receiving room.
